Description

Ocu-GLO commonly suffer from ophthalmic diseases that can diminish not only their sight but also their quality of life. Most breeds of dogs are genetically predisposed to developing many different kinds of ocular diseases, such as retinal disease, glaucoma, and cataracts. Additionally, any dog can develop ocular disorders as a result of diet, age, and/or environment. The eye is constantly bombarded by light, creating oxidative stress. This in turn can trigger a toxic soup of free radicals which damages cells of the eye.

Ocu-GLO Canine Vision Supplement was formulated by veterinary ophthalmologists and a compounding pharmacist to help combat the damaging effects of free radicals at the cellular level. It also helps support ocular health in normal dogs, which is especially important for any dog at risk for developing ocular disease. Ocu-GLO provides a balanced blend of 12 natural antioxidants derived from the purest and highest quality ingredients available. Because Ocu-GLO is administered orally, it may also help support healthy brain function, which is especially important in geriatric dogs with Canine Cognitive Dysfunction. It also supports immune health, joint health, and also skin and coat health.

While Ocu-GLO is an excellent stand-alone canine supplement, it can also be combined with the other members of Animal Necessity's family of natural nutraceuticals, including: Joint Guard; Imuno-2865; Serenin Vet; Healthy Aging Vet, Weight Guard Vet, and ShaNa Vet;

Ocu-GLO is available in two convenient dosage sizes: Small Dog Gelcaps for dogs weighing 10 lbs or less, and Medium/Large Dog Gelcaps for dogs weighing 11 lbs or greater.

FAQ

  • Dogs mature cats seen by a veterinary ophthalmologist
  • Geriatric, working, and active dogs
  • Adult cats weighing over 5 pounds (2.27 kg)
  • Adult cats with no history of liver disease
  • Pre and post-operative ocular surgery patients

There is no added flavor included in the Ocu-GLO™, however, antioxidants tend to be bitter-tasting. It is best if the dog does not chew the Gelcap and instead swallows it whole. The main reason for this is that if the Gelcap were chewed, the contents could stain carpet (and also the face of white dogs), but the staining easily washes out with water. Do not mistake this staining for blood!

If your dog won't readily take Ocu-GLO™, all the "usual suggestions" that Veterinarians give pet owners apply. You can also google search "how to pill my pet" for helpful tips.

Two very important reasons that you can trust Ocu-GLO™:

  1. Two Board-Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologists and a Compounding Pharmacist, with over 75 years combined experience in veterinary health, designed Ocu-GLO™ and tested its safety and palatability.
  2. The 12 antioxidant ingredients in Ocu-GLO™ are all pharmaceutical grade, which means that they are made under strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines. GMP standards are much higher than those which nutritional product manufacturers are required to meet. The ingredients are natural and of the highest quality.
This is a common question and there are some articles in the literature about this topic. There are two components to grapes that have nutritional benefits. The seeds of grapes are completely safe for all species evaluated so far, including dogs. The seeds of grapes contain proanthocyanidins, a group of antioxidants that benefit eyes and the rest of the body. There have been no side effects to grapeseeds known as of yet. However, there are compounds in the skins of grapes and raisins, especially darker varieties of the fruits, that cause kidney damage in dogs.
The shelf life is three years due to the special way in which Ocu-GLO™ is manufactured. Because oxygen can oxidize and break down antioxidants, oxygen is intentionally removed from the inside of the Gelcap during the manufacturing process via a nitrogen gas exchange process.

Ocu-GLO™ comes in 90 count bottles in two convenient sizes:

  1. One for Small Dogs weighing 10 lbs or less. They are given 1 Gelcap daily.
  2. One for Medium to Large Dogs weighing 11 lbs or more. Dogs between 11 and 30 lbs receive 1 Gelcap daily; 31 to 60 lbs receive 2 Gelcaps daily; 61 lbs and over receive 3 Gelcaps daily. Giant breed dogs over 100 lbs can receive 3 or 4 Gelcaps daily.

Two Small Dog Size Gelcaps equals ONE Medium/Large Dog Size Gelcap.

If the daily dose is more than one Gelcap, it can be given all at once or divided throughout the day. It should be administered at mealtime to improve absorption.

We also have Ocu-GLO™ Power Blend for dogs and cats. You can open up the capsules and sprinkle the powder. It is much more palatable and easier to take.

This depends on the weight of your animal. Please use our main menu or search box above to find any supplement you're interested in. Each supplement has a Suggested Use tab that will inform how long that supplement will last.
The Ocu-GLO™ GelCaps in the Medium/Large Dog size are 2cm long and 0.5cm wide. The Small Dog size GelCaps are approximately half that size.
  1. Try our new Ocu-GLO™ Power Blend first! It is a more palatable powder that you can sprinkle. Also, it can be used for cats, too!
  2. Because the reddish-orange gelcap contents can stain fabric and carpet, it is best if you can find a creative way to have your pet swallow the Ocu-GLO™ gelcap whole and NOT have them chew it. You can google "best methods to pill my pet" for more answers.
  3. Professional method: Open your dog's mouth, place the gelcap as far back in the throat as possible and hold the mouth shut for 5-10 seconds to make them swallow. You might also try gently blowing in your dog's nose as this will cause them to swallow. If you are not sure how to do this, have your veterinarian's staff show you how.

Many veterinary ophthalmologists advise clients to administer Ocu-GLO™ up until the evening prior to surgery, and then no food, supplement, or oral medications the morning of surgery.

Ocu-GLO™ is to be administered at mealtime the evening of surgery if the patient is eating well either at home or if the patient is in the clinic. We always recommend that the owner check with their veterinarian before administering any supplement prior to surgery.

Fecal coloration change with Ocu-GLO™, which can be normal. Usually you will see more of a hint of yellow because of the strong lutein ingredient that comes from the yellow marigold plant.

We are always concerned because dark, tarry stool can mean digested blood (which is not good). If noticed, we usually ask clients to stop Ocu-GLO™ for 3 days and see if there is a change back to normal stool. If so, then we suggest starting back on Ocu-GLO™ at 1/2 the dose.

For example, if this animal is on one Ocu-GLO™ a day, then we would give one Ocu-GLO™ every other day, as many animals can have sensitive gastrointestinal tracts. Also, any medications that animals are on while on Ocu-GLO™ is very important to know, as the medication alone can cause indigestion which can change stool color (for example, pentoxifylline).

Most multi-vitamins available for dogs have very low amounts of vitamins and minerals and are primarily to complement the diet that they are eating. The better quality foods are supplemented with a variety of antioxidants and vitamins/minerals but if they are cooked at too high a temperature, many of those nutrients may be somewhat depleted. Therefore, supplementing is a good idea.

We put the equivalent of a multivitamin into Ocu-GLO™ so that owners would not have to give a separate multivitamin. However, if you choose to give a separate multi-vitamin, it is unlikely that you will overdose your dog. The bottom line is that if you only want to use one product, use Ocu-GLO™; but, if you like the multi-vitamin that you use, we are happy to advise you on whether it is too much or just right.

Yes. Green tea extract raw material present in Ocu-GLO™ contains approximately 0.3 to 0.4% caffeine. There is 40 mg raw material per softgel in Ocu-GLO™ which is equivalent to 0.12-0.16 mg caffeine per softgel. This is the trace amount of caffeine present in one softgel.
Yes, the outer gelatin coating has beef made from bones and the omega fatty acids are from sardines and anchovies.

In Ocu-GLO™ Medium/Large each softgel contains 4.02 calories. This is derived by combining together 300mg of Fat (2.7 calories), 220mg of Protein (0.88 calories) and 110mg of Carbohydrates (0.44 calories).

In Ocu-GLO™ Small each softgel contains 2.07 calories. This is derived by combining together 150mg of Fat (1.35 calories), 120mg of Protein (0.48 calories) and 60mg of Carbohydrates (0.24 calories).

Ocu-GLO™ has an appropriate amount of Omega 3 fatty acids for the weight of your dog, however, some dogs (and humans) can tolerate higher doses if they need to take more for other diseases such as skin problems.

We recommend stopping the extra Omega 3 fatty acids while you begin Ocu-GLO™, then after a week, you can gradually add in the other Omega product. If your dog develops diarrhea, then the amount of omegas is too high and do not use the extra dose.

While zeaxanthin is not a specific ingredient in the Ocu-GLO formulation, a form of the carotenoid, called meso-zeaxanthin, is provided via the conversion of lutein once it reaches the eye. Meso-zeaxanthin is a potent carotenoid located in the retina. It can not be found in dietary food sources, and there is no evidence to prove that laboratory extraction of meso-zeaxanthin from synthetic lutein is available for absorption by the body. The most natural means, therefore, of providing this potent retinal carotenoid to the body is via supplemental lutein.
Glycerin in the shell of Ocu-GLO™ is a source for carbohydrates but the amount is not high (due to softgel size). No other RM in the product is carbohydrates or sugars. Gelatin is a source for protein and not for carbohydrates or sugars.

Happy with the product
October 26, 2020
Unfortunately, our dog was diagnosed with PRA and there is not much we can do about it, so OCU GLO was the supplement that gave us the most hope. We’ve only been using it for a couple of months and the right eye was already damaged a lot but we are trying our best to save the left one.
I don’t know if the supplement worked or if the situation would be the same without using it, but our vet was pleasantly surprised that somehow the progression has stopped and the vision was stabilized. He said that we were an exception to the rule and that he hadn't seen this kind of improvement treating PRA patients. Our next visit will be in a couple of months, we hope that the situation will not change, and with the help of OCU GLO, we will be able to successfully control this misfortune for many years (fingers crossed) :)
Our dog weighs 25-27kg and has no trouble swallowing the pills, covered with cheese or pate. We give her 2 pills a day before the meals.

Merchant Response:Hi Gintaute, We are sorry to hear about the progressive retinal atrophy diagnosis. You are a good pet parent. We hope your next vet visit goes well.
Pros
  • Hopefully stabilizes the vison and eye health, easy to use, fast shipment.
Cons
  • Expensive, additional custom payments for non US buyers.

Dry Eye Relief
September 23, 2020
Our dog had a severe case of dry eye, resulting in many trips to the ophthalmologist. I've been using this product for the past 2 years and haven't had any problems since. It really works for him. I wrap it in a piece of roast beef and it goes right down. Don't give it to him where he has to chew it, because inside contains an orange oil and hard to clean up.
Pros
  • Works well for dry eye syndrome.
Cons
  • Have to wrap it in something to eat.

May have been helping but leaves stains
June 11, 2019
We have an 8 year old Boerboel who's eyes aren't seeing as bright as they did in his younger years. I decided to try this product after reading all the good reviews. He finished one bottle (I only gave him 2 pills per day instead of the 3 he's supposed to get for his size to see if he had any reactions and because it is very expensive and one bottle only last him a month). He had no issues with the first bottle but I couldn't tell if it was doing anything. Shortly after starting the second bottle, he started having an orange oily discharge from his anus. It stained his fur, the bed quilt, and the carpet. The bottle even says it will stain things if capsules are opened and not given whole, but no warnings of anal leakage. This is the only thing that has changed in his diet. I stopped giving them and no more leakage. I really want the benefits of the pills but cannot continue to use them if this is the side effect. I am trying them one more time and if it happens again, we are done with them.
Pros
  • May have been helping but could not tell after finishing the first bottle
Cons
  • Caused orange oily anal leakage which stained fur, carpet, and bedding.
  • Very expensive, especially if you have a large breed.

Ocu Glo
April 3, 2017
I was recommended to start using this product after my vet noticed some early-onset, small changes in my 6year old Miniature Schnauzer's eyes. When we discussed data for eye health related nutrients I urged her to take a look at recent developments (AREDS study NIH 2013). Of course, we will not know if this product "works" unless there is a reversal or significant slow down of changes (and even then...) but the nutrients are good and the bonus for my dog is that it has also had positive effect on his skin, too!
Easy to feed, too - you can puncture the capsule right into food (beware, the contents are colored red).

Good supplement, but a real mess to dispense
June 1, 2016
I have a small 3# papillon who can't swallow the "Small Dog" gelcap so I have to cut tip of capsules off, squeeze liquid into pureed pumpkin so she can eat it. She eats it up but my hands, countertop, scissors etc. are a mess as the liquid stains a dark red/orange color. I've sent the maker an email asking for help - it'd be perfect if they made the liquid available in a tube or bottle!

Great Product for Eye Health
February 10, 2015
After my dachshund, Heidi, lost her one eye to glaucoma I researched everything I could find to help preserve her other eye since most dogs will develop glaucoma in their other eye within a year or two. Ocu-Glo vitamins were mentioned in many veterinary websites and articles as a great supplement to use. The veterinary opthamologist we visited also recommended it as a good product to help support ongoing eye health along with maintenance medication in Heidi's case. It's been a few years now and her remaining eye is still healthy.

Works if you can get the dogs to take it
September 22, 2014
I had a diabetic dog about 16 years old. He developed macular degeneration, and the vet recommended Ocu-GLO for him. I gave it to him for 6 months and took him back to the vet to see how he was doing. She said his eyes were still about the same, so I feel that it slowed the degeneration down. Unfortunately, I lost him two months ago, but I have been giving the remaining pills to another older dog who has a congenital catarat. The capsuls are very large, and she will pick it out of her food and leave it on the floor. I have tried squeezing the contents over her food, hiding it in a pill pocket, and pressing the contents between two pieces of meat. She doesn't like it and eats around whatever it's in, leaving the remnants in the bottom of the dish to dry up. It does seem to help and there doesn't seem to be any other equivalent product out there. I wish they would make the pill in a chewable tablet..

My Dog Won't Take It
July 21, 2014
My dog's veterinary opthamologist highly recommended Ocu-GLO for my senior Shih Tzu after her cataract surgery. Unfortunately these pills are too big and no matter what I put them in (peanut butter, bread, pill pockets, etc.), she will not swallow them. I find them on the floor around my home and the liquid is red and stains my rugs. My dog usually doesn't have a problem taking other pills if they're in peanut butter, so these must not smell/taste very good. These pills are too big for a small dog. The vet suggested squeezing out the filling and putting it on her food, but these are too expensive to buy a second bottle and try that. I wish they made it in a dropper.

I give this to my two senior dogs. One is diabetic and lost his vision; the other is getting old which the doctor recommend this to. I buy the snip version which I can't find on this website. The snip version has a long slim tail which makes cutting it very easy. So, for ppl that want to squeeze it out rather than the whole pill, try the snip one.

the vet suggested we try this product, lulu is losing her vision. i don't like giving this product a poor rating because it might be fine for another dog. lulu is tiny, 6lbs. and can not take the small dog portion since it is still to big. i cut it open to retrieve the insides (not that easy) and it stains (which is stated on the label). i wish there could be an easier way.
