Ursodiol
Ursodiol is a prescription medication used to treat liver and gall bladder disease in cats and dogs. These tablets contain ursodeoxycholic acid, which inhibits the production of cholesterol in the liver. This improves the flow of bile from the gall bladder into the intestine, preventing the toxic bile from building up. This can be useful for patients suffering from cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, and gallbladder disease.
By inhibiting the production of cholesterol, Ursodiol also reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed from food and facilitates its lysis, which can also help prevent the formation of gallstones. In fact, administering this medication can even help dissolve certain types of stones that have already begun to form.
