| The first step to setting up an aquarium is choosing the right size. The right size can depend on many factors such as how much space can you afford, what kind of fish you plan to keep, and how much time you want to invest on maintaining your tank. | Keeping your aquarium water clean is extremely important as an aquarium is in a closed setting unlike oceans or lakes. Your fish will produce waste, placing heavy emphasis on your filter to collect and reduce harmful byproducts. Choosing a filter depends on the size of your aquarium and how much waste your fish produces. It never hurts to get a filter slightly rated above your tank’s size, i.e. choosing a filter rated for 40 gallons to be used on a 20 gallon tank. |

| Changing the filter cartridge is also important to allowing your filter to perform its best. Most filter cartridges should be changed once every 1-2 months. |

| Tropical fish have specific requirements for the temperatures they are comfortable living in. Fancy guppies typically live in mid 70 degree temperature ranges. It’s highly advisable to research the type of fish you want to add prior to purchasing them at a local fish store. The type of aquarium heater you choose depends on the size of your aquarium. Having a separate thermometer is also helpful to knowing what the actual aquarium temperature is. |
